High Definition is here, and we are very capable of producing Blu-Ray DVD's
which contain this high quality media.
Blu-ray has two layers of inter activity: a basic layer called HDMV and a more advanced layer called BD-J. HDMV authoring has some similarities to standard definition authoring but also allows for advanced features such as popup menus and high quality subtitles. BD-J is built using the Java platform and offers a wide range of advanced features including network access and interactive applications. Currently, most Blu-ray titles coming out of Hollywood are authored using the HDMV layer because BD-J is not supported on the early generation of set top players. As new players enter the market, BD-J will likely be used more often and interactive features will become more advanced.
Blu-ray Disc can be burned onto writable media called BD-R. Because the media and burners are readily available, Blu-ray is a good option for small runs of titles and controlled uses such as trade shows and demonstrations. Playback of BD-R media in setop players requires the latest hardware firmware updates. Be sure that your player is up to date to ensure compatibility.
Blu-ray Disc is a next generation disc format developed by Sony. Built from the ground up, Sony wanted its format to be more than simply an extension of the DVD format. Blu-ray supports the same audio and video codecs as HD DVD(AVC, VC-1 & MPEG-2) but has been built around its own specification that has a variety of differences. One of these differences is disc capacity. In both its single and dual layer varieties, Blu-ray has significantly more capacity and can therefore contain more content than HD DVD. Also, currently, there are no Blu-ray players that offer network ports: so unlike HD DVD, content cannot be updated dynamically. Picture-in-picture is another feature that HD DVD has over Blu-ray. However, both PiP and network connectivity are expected to enter the Blu-ray specification within the next year.
